For parents, a very modern worry has to do with digital devices. In her article Amy Hart Clyne of Pitcairn (United States) shares a sample contract parents can use. Amy reports that Pitcairn frequently recommends family contracts as: an effective way to set mutual expectations, clarify responsibilities, and minimise future conflicts. When families work together to prepare a contract, it promotes trust, incorporates multiple perspectives, and makes it more likely that younger family members will follow the terms of the agreement. Amy also offers some tips for young people: Tell your parents about your experience with digital devices. Tell your parents what your friends are and aren't allowed to do with their devices. Remain calm. Understand that in the eyes of your parents, your safety truly is the most important factor. The contract process is walked through step-by-step. Additional internet resources about age-appropriate games and apps, online security advice and cell phone safety are included.
