In the early 1980s, fresh out of law school, I was in the throes of a "let's see if I can become a pro tennis player" phase (spoiler alert, I earned a total of USD150). It was during this time, living in Aspen, that I had the transformative experience of watching Timothy Gallwey, the acclaimed author of The Inner Game of Tennis, conduct a tennis/life workshop. In a memorable exercise, Gallwey asked a participant to hit tennis balls. The scene was far from pretty - shots were flying everywhere. Gallwey took the fellow aside, whispered something to him, and then fed him more balls. The subsequent transformation was nothing short of miraculous. He began striking the ball with an assuredness and precision that belied his earlier fumbles.
