Jay Hughes is in many ways the founder of the field of family governance and successful multi-generational family strategies. In this seminal, thought-provoking article he gives an early warning of the negative, albeit unintended, consequences of long-term trusts, which continue to be promoted by professionals, without much regard to the long-term effects on families. As so many family offices include long-term trusts - this should be required reading. Families and their advisers will profit from having these discussions.
