01.09.2016
Welcome to the inaugural issue of The International Family Offices Journal. Future issues of the journal will build upon this theme and will cover increasingly complex issues relating to family offices, on a global basis. -

(Article) The Family Advisory Council: 21 years of valuable closed-door discussions
01.06.2017
Twenty-one years ago Barbara Hauser and Suzy Peterfriend had an informal meeting in New York of several key advisers to well-known family offices. The meeting, arranged by Suzy, had as its purpose to introduce Barbara to other key advisers as she began a new role advising a billionaire and his family office on how to keep his multitude of businesses under family control, for generations and with harmony. That small meeting grew into a pattern of similar meetings, with its own name ?The Family Advisory Council?. In their article the authors explain how the meetings work and why they have been so successful. The group is now in its 21st year of meetings. Family offices are often isolated; these discussions provide a forum for sharing information and experiences. Their hope is to encourage other groups, around the world, to form similar groups. They are happy to be a resource. -

(Article) On wealth - note from the editor
01.09.2018
Years ago, when I first searched for quotes about wealth, I found many but they were all quite negative! ?It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven.? ?The love of money is the root of all evil.? There are recent books on the ?dark side' of wealth and even one promoting a state of ?freedom from wealth'. Below are some quotes that I hope are provocative. Our New York discussion group finally had a session on ?The Joy of Wealth'. We would welcome any of your comments on this tantalising topic. -

(Article) Interview with Dennis Passis, founder of the Family Wealth Library
01.06.2019
Based in Chicago, Dennis grew up as part of a family business. Over the years he began to wonder why so much more effort was spent on operating a business rather than ensuring that a family would function well together, especially when in an environment of wealth. He decided to do something about it. The result will be the first online searchable library on family wealth. We had the pleasure of interviewing Dennis, here is an excerpt. The library is scheduled to go live in June. -

01.12.2019
The authors of the book ?Mommy, are we rich??: Talking to children about family money, Suzy Peterfriend, Florida, USA, and Barbara Hauser, Minnesota, USA, have looked at the advice they gave to parents of five-year-olds some 18 years ago. Those children are now millennials. The authors interviewed a number of them for this article. Their findings include: Our millennials already have access to a wealth of information, some say it is an overload. They live in complex social networks enabled by the ubiquitous iPhones. They ask questions of each other and lean on reviews from friends. So they are not asking parents as many money questions. But they do have thoughts and worries about money. They include three of their original chapters and add the new learnings about millennials at the end of each one. -

(Article) The benefits of applying the rule of law in family governance
15.06.2022
Barbara Hauser provides an enlightening article entitled "The benefits of applying the rule of law in family governance". The piece is an abstract from her recent PhD thesis at the University of Zurich Law School. If a country benefits from the rule of law, a family must benefit too! Barbara elaborates on the meaning of the rule of law and concludes that the application of the rule of law will imply that all family members will accept to be bound by certain procedural rules and will be guided by three overriding principles: transparency, accountability and participation. She also provides examples of the successful application of the rule of law in family governance. -
